John Deere 750 isn’t another case of lousy badge engineering by our westerners. This group of boys from Iowa just teamed up with all the right folks. When John Deere wanted a smaller tractor model, they sought to work with noted diesel engine builder Yanmar from Japan, producing these giant machines before World War II.

What did these two create? Well, that’s a hard one. Much is so great about the American-Made machine, like the John Deere Tipper, which is still one of the best-selling devices of all time. The Japanese built the monster truck with heavy-duty four-wheel drive and four axles, but the bottom line is that the Japanese made it better. Here’s how that happened:

“When we started the project, our priority was to build a powerful, reliable machine. We used high-quality steel in all the important areas, including the frame, the drum, the flange, and the pinion. All the parts were either made in the U.S. or Japan. This ensured quality, and we could easily accept our returns if something went wrong,” recalls Bill Keene, who was the project manager for the first seventy-eight series. “We also put in place a quality control program. If we made a mistake in production, we could easily track it and fix it without any problems.”

The first thing they did to improve on the machine was eliminating all of the low-cost steel used for the framework and body. Instead, the John Deere 750 Tipper made machine rolled steel, like the world’s most robust welding steel. This allowed them to use components from the American and Japanese automobile industries. “That enabled us to get a better price and more material for each part. It also reduced our dependence on foreign labor,” says Keene. These days, he adds, “we’re using high-tech machinery and high-tech welds.”

Another critical component to their success was their consistent ability to innovate. John Deere didn’t like to reinvent himself. “We knew we were on the cutting edge of new technologies. So we didn’t try to copy anyone else’s design. That allowed us to be unique.”

But they weren’t content to think about what would make a good foundation or frame for a construction vehicle. “We were constantly looking for ways to improve the way people used our products,” recalls Keene. “So we designed the parts to work with one another. For example, the frame can support seats and cargo without compromising the person’s safety driving the truck. We designed the trucks to be safer and easier to operate.”

Today, John Deere isn’t just providing drivers and equipment with tools that work together. They’re thinking about how each of their products can work in tandem with one another. They’ve even created technology that allows their equipment to speak the same language as consumers. By having easy-to-understand video lessons, they hope to bridge the gap between consumers and builders.

“We would like people to think of us as a family,” says Keene. “We want them to come into our shop with the same idea of satisfaction we have. People like to feel like they can get something from us, whether it’s quality construction materials or quality service. And we do have something to offer.”

While working on the line to develop new technologies, John Deere takes a new piece of equipment from its toolbox and puts it through its paces. The result can sometimes be surprising. “The biggest surprise was seeing some of the parts breaking when they were being used to build the front end of a semi-trailer truck,” recalls Keene. “The parts were just too flimsy. But we’ve since developed high-tech materials that handle these harsh conditions better.” Since that initial run, John Deere has been able to gain much trust among contractors, subcontractors, and parts suppliers.

John Deere 750; doesn’t stop at quality parts either. “We also build parts that have the look of a John Deere part,” says Keene. “When you see a John Deere part, you’ll know it’s the real deal.” While some of his competitors continue to market imitation products that don’t hold up, he feels that John Deere is building better outcomes than most. He attributes this success to the company’s consistent attention to detail, which is evident in its commitment to quality construction.

When it comes to the consumer, John Deere has come a long way. In the early 1900s, the company didn’t sell anything and was considered a regional player. Over time, as John Deere products became more mainstream, people started taking notice. Today, John Deere 750 products are everywhere. They’re in the construction zone, on the streets, and in every automotive industry niche. “I think they’ve gotten so good at what they do that people just know them by name,” says Keene.

John Deere first began producing small tractors in the late 1940s with the M3 tractor, which engineer Harry Warren designed. It was not until the mid to late sixties that John Deere introduced their first full-size machine. Their most popular models at this time were the 75W and the AG.

john deere 750When John Deere was looking for a smaller compact tractor model, they noted diesel engine builder Yanmar of Japan, who had been making these machines for decades. With the partnership, the result was a series of four-cylinder diesel-powered tractors ranging in size from two to four cylinders over the mid to late sixties. One of these featured the “GCJ” engine, a shortened version of the regular J engines used in John Deere farming equipment. The GCJ series is still one of the most popular models today.

The first of the four-cylinder John Deere 750 resulted from an accident where a farmer was using heavy machinery while his wife tended to their baby. The heavy machine broke into pieces after being struck by a falling tree stump. John Deere came up with the idea to build a small tractor to use in harvesting hay. Their second machine was the “successor to the GCJ,” which features a diesel engine instead of a gasoline-powered engine.

Today the company still produces the “GCJ,” which is the first model in the series, which featured a gas engine, and John Deere still uses this engine for making their small tractors. The “AG” series continued this success by adding a fifth cylinder, initially added in the larger 75W engine style. Today the “750” is a John Deere machine that can be used to plow, cut grass, dig ponds, and just about any garden job you can think of. This tractor is also known as a “land explorer.”
